Lyrics
We’re past the end
I think it’s time to start again
The past is gone
And, with it, all that we did wrong
Let’s find our dreams
And do our best to make them real
The world is ours
So let’s begin to let it heal

And you said “Why’d we have to go so wrong
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”
You said “Why’d we have to wait so long
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”

Let’s reinvent
As we rebuild to our content
Let’s make it work
We shouldn’t waste all that we’ve spent

You could be a painter; I could be an artist
You could be a singer; I’ll be your guitarist
You could plant an orchard; I could be a farmer
You could be snake and I could be your charmer

You said “Why’d we have to go so wrong
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”
You said “Why’d we have to wait so long
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”

[solo]

You could be a painter; I could be an artist
You could be a singer; I’ll be your guitarist
You could be a teacher, teach me how to work it
We could both be clowns, still living in a circus

You said “Why’d we have to go so wrong
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”
You said “Why’d we have to wait so long
To find out there’s a place where we belong?”

Footnotes
This song essentially brings to an end the end-of-the-world pseudo-storyline that has run through the tracks between Power/Bliss and here. And, again, whether all of these songs have been sung by the same person is up to the listener – if so, then at least the characters in The Film And The Photograph get a nice happy ending in this track.

The complete breakdown of the song at the very end is actually a pretty common occurrence – almost every one of my songs that ends with a fade-out had a lot of messing about at the end of the recording. The decision to keep this one in was partly due to the fact that The Film And The Photograph and The End? also finish with fade-outs (and three in a row didn’t sit well with me), but was mostly because it was hilarious and actually fit very well with the mood of the song.

I still regret that I didn’t somehow work the mandolin and bongos into this track – if I had, it would contain every instrument that I currently possess. I was so close!
