Lyrics
A full grown man, back in the same place and in the same mind again.
And here I am, filled with a childish sense of wonder again.

So step inside the time machine with me…
Step inside the time machine with me…

Surrendering – I’m giving in to the stronger side of me.
I know you’ve seen that I’ve never been good with responsibility.
I was missing what I had before and I felt safer then than I do here.
So get me out of here and back to the life that I used to hold so dear.

So step inside the time machine with me…
Step inside the time machine with me…
Step inside the time machine with me…
Step inside the time machine with me…

What to expect? Will it be as good as I recall?
Open my eyes and see faces I’m not sure I know.
Back in time, surrounded by faces I left behind.
I’m just a child: at the end of it all, I’m just a child.

Footnotes
Out of all the tracks on For Great Justice!, the opening one had the most changes. At least three, totally different songs were written with the intention of making it the opening to the album. They all followed a similar theme of leaving adult life and returning to childhood, either via time travel or just by throwing off all responsibility and having fun. The idea of having two parts of the same song at either end of the album was also a long-standing idea but it didn’t seem entirely feasible until I wrote The Time Machine. For more, see The Time Machine (part 2).
