Lyrics
Time to grow up.
We can’t stay here.
Time to grow up
And face the world we fear.

Change is natural;
Change is always there.
You can run from it
Or you can take the dare…

But don’t let them go.
Don’t let them go.
You must carry the memories,
Carry the memories with you.

Some friends have gone,
Others take their place.
When the former leave
Take comfort in their embrace.

The only changeless thing
Is that there’s always change.
Take it in your stride;
Let things rearrange…

But don’t let them go.
Don’t let them go.
You must carry the memories of everything you’ve ever loved…
But don’t let them go.
Don’t let them go.
You must carry the memories of everyone you’ve ever loved…

And when you’re alone they’ll be there.
Yes, the people you love will be there.
And the things that you’ve done will be there.
If you carry the memories,
Carry the memories with you.

Footnotes
Unlike a lot of this album, Carry The Memories draws from personal experiences. I wrote it in October 2010, when I was coming to the end of a (relatively) short period of depression. In the space of about six months, I had lost one of my close childhood friends to leukaemia, had an agonising falling-out with another, very close friend and had been experiencing very painful symptoms of my not-yet-diagnosed IBS. During that time, I had written very little and what I did write was either bad or really angry / depressing. Carry The Memories was a look towards something brighter, both in my writing and in my general life, and the lyrics reflect that. It can take a long time to see the bright side of some changes – and not all changes have one – but, at the end of the day, life is just a long series of changes: some good, some bad. And these things do take time – I’d say it was at least another 9 months after writing this song that I could declare myself 100% depression / paranoia free – but if we carry what we’ve learned with us, it always gets better.
